International Research and Scholarship

Externally funded projects

External funding and project data included in this dashboard is obtained from MSU’s Contracts and Grants (CGA) database and does not reflect the following: independently conducted faculty research and scholarship, study abroad, representation of international students and/or scholars, MSU- funded international activities, or any international activities that are not routed through and captured by the CGA database. Fee-for-service work may or may not be included.

This dashboard includes the 10-calendar-year period from 1/1/2008 – 12/31/2017, using data based on the MSU board date (the date an award is approved by MSU’s Board of Trustees), not awarded date. A multi-year award may be allocated all at once, and in this case, the data is reflected in a single year.  Alternatively, a multi-year award may be allocated incrementally (typically annually) over the duration of the award period, and in this case, the data is reflected incrementally over the duration of the award period.

Funding and project numbers are weighted. For projects that involve more than one country, an equal portion of the project is allocated to all countries involved, which may not accurately reflect the actual project effort for each country. Because the CGA database automatically calculates faculty credit, the principal investigator and college aggregated data is weighted based on these calculations. Funding level and project numbers are not, however, weighted by theme, and all the credit is assigned to one theme and subtheme, even for multidisciplinary projects. Theme assignment is subjective and based on the title and any other available information.

Every attempt has been made to ensure accuracy of the data and the analysis that follows. We are constantly improving our methods and efficiency, and the accuracy of our analyses has been improving over time. Even so, because of system limitations, data consumers should expect there to be a margin of error.
